Vintage Art Deco MCM Egyptian Handmade Wall Hanging Tapestry Applique Fabric, Women and Archery. Condition is "Used". Shipped with USPS Priority Mail.
This is a beautiful hand crafted tapestry that will surely add delightful color, cultural richness, and girl power to your space!
The piece is 30.5” wide by 35” tall.
The background fabric is some kind of cotton linen it seems, a lighter kind of canvas for the artist’s tableau. A little rough in texture – not as rough as burlap but lots of lovely texture to it. It's appliqued with finer cotton pieces that, by the look of them, were hand-dyed with natural vegetable or mineral dyes. The colors have a very earthy quality to them. The dye is a little uneven, as is typical for any hand-dyed fabric. It’s also possible that there has been some natural fading over time (see detail photo of arm).
The piece is also trimmed with a royal blue colored cotton fabric. Everything is hand-stitched, as you can see from the photos of front and back. There is some kind of stain on the back. It looks like water and could be removed with a careful cleaning. It does not show through to the front. See photos for detail.
This is a clearly a piece of local craftsmanship and traditional artistry, depicting two Egyptian women engaged in the sport of artistry. One woman is sitting on a traditional seat, mid-shot, having already successfully landed one arrow in a bird. Another woman is sitting offering the archer her next arrow.
A lovely one-of-a-kind piece of folk art. In great condition.
It will come folded but the creases are easily ironed or steamed out. I just did a steaming for the photos.
